How to Read a Supplement Label: Seven Things to Check

A good label tells you clearly what is inside and how to use it. A weak one relies on big claims and small print. Learning to read the label takes two minutes and makes you a more confident buyer.

Why the label matters

Supplements and nutrition drinks are food products, so in India they should carry the information required by FSSAI. The pack, and often the product page, is your best source of truth. Marketing copy can be persuasive, but the label has to be accurate.

Seven things to check on a supplement label
Seven checks that take about two minutes.

The seven checks

  1. Serving sizeEverything else on the label is based on one serving. Check how many scoops, sachets or capsules that means.
  2. Ingredient listIngredients are listed in descending order by weight. Look for names you recognise and for specific forms, such as magnesium bisglycinate instead of just magnesium.
  3. Nutrition informationLook for the nutrition information panel on the pack. It shows what one serving provides, in a standard format.
  4. Allergen statementLook for common allergens such as milk, nuts, soy and gluten, and for any cross-contact warnings.
  5. FSSAI licence numberIndian food products must display a 14-digit FSSAI licence number. You can verify it on the FSSAI website.
  6. Batch number and expiryCheck that the product is well within its best-before date and note the batch number for any queries.
  7. Directions and cautionsFollow the usage directions. Cautions may mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, medication or storage.

Quick takeaway

If you cannot find the ingredient list, the licence number or the directions, treat that as a reason to pause and ask questions.

Red flags worth noticing

  • Promises to cure, treat or reverse a disease. Supplements cannot legally claim this.
  • “Miracle”, “detox” or “guaranteed” language.
  • Missing company address, licence number or contact details.
  • Testimonials presented as proof of medical effect.

Ask the brand

A trustworthy company will be happy to answer questions about sourcing, testing and ingredient forms. If they avoid the question, that tells you something too. At SophEva, we list the ingredients in each sachet and explain the role of each one so you can review them before you buy.

Talk to a professional

Bring the label to your doctor or pharmacist if you take medication, have a health condition or are pregnant or breastfeeding. They can check for interactions and suggest what is suitable for you.
